Steam wouldn’t have met so formidable a rival had not that rival had some nice advantages to supply. The nice oil-fields of America and Russia had not been discovered. Then go to a big fuel- or oil-engine plant. A great oil-engine offers 20-25 per cent., and in particular varieties the figures are stated to rise to 35-forty per cent. Some concept of the power which has been going to waste in ironworks for many years previous could also be gathered from a report of Professor Hubert after experiments made in 1900. He says that engines of massive dimension do not use greater than one hundred cubic feet of common blast-furnace gas per efficient horse-energy-hour, which is lower than one-fourth of the consumption of gasoline required to develop the identical power from boilers and good trendy condensing steam-engines, so that there’s an immense surplus of power to be obtained from a blast-furnace if the blowing engines are worked by the gas it generates, a surplus which can be nonetheless additional elevated if the gasoline is properly cleaned. This use of a “bye-product” of business is exceptional, however it can be paralleled. The gasoline contains practically no hydrogen, because the air despatched by way of the furnace is dry; however since it will stand excessive compression, it is vitally appropriate to be used in giant engines.
Mr. B. H. Thwaite has, however, perfected means for the separation of injurious matter, and blast-furnace gas is coming into basic use in England and on the Continent. Illuminating gasoline had not come into normal use, and such coal fuel as was made was expensive. A pound of anthracite coal thus burnt will yield sufficient fuel to develop 1 h.p. A pound of coal burnt beneath the perfect type of steam-engine offers but 10 per cent. But whereas the correct fuels for one of these motor were absent, coal, the food of the steam-engine, lay prepared handy, and in types which, although useless for many purposes, could be advantageously burnt underneath a boiler. The first class is so well-known as the mover of motor autos and boats that we want not linger here on it. All explosion engines (excepting the very small types employed on motor cycles) have a water-jacket round the cylinders to absorb among the heat of combustion, which might otherwise render the metallic so sizzling as to make correct lubrication not possible, and likewise would unduly increase the incoming cost of fuel and air before compression. The latest development is the “suction” fuel engine, which makes its own gasoline by drawing steam and air through glowing gas throughout the suction stroke.
3. In a combustible mixture conduit for supplying combustible mixture to an inner combustion engine, designed to be externally heated by exhaust products from stated engine, a cylin drical shell forming part of mentioned conduit, a diffuser inside said shell comprising an axial core consisting of an elongated cylindrical member terminating wanting the outlet finish of stated shell, flat ns in axial planes connecting stated cylindrical member all through its size to the heated wall of said shell for conducting heat to stated cylindrical member, and themselves constituting a heating element, the lower edges of said fins sloping from the decrease end of stated cylindrical member to meet the wall of mentioned shell adjacent its outlet finish whereby an undivided mixing space is supplied between the lower edges of said fins and the’outlet end of mentioned shell, stated diffuser having a circular cap at its anterior finish defining with the Wall of said shell an annular inlet to mentioned shell, the forwardly directed face of said cap being convex for diverting the center portion of the mixture column getting into said diffuser outwardly towards the heated wall of stated shell and being of larger diameter than mentioned cylindrical member whereby part of the middle portion of said column is diverted towards said cylindrical Y- member by vacuum produced beneath mentioned cap by movement of mixture past the sting thereof, stated diffuser being characterized by the absence of any baille in the trail of that part of the mixture column diverted towards stated cylindrical member, the outlet end of mentioned shell terminating in an inwardly and downwardly sloped peripheral flange and diverting the peripheral portion of the mixture column towards the axis of said column.
These plates or fins I 5 are organized in planes parallel to the axis of mentioned core to avoid a vortex and have their outer edges I8 shaped to carefully contact the inner face of the conduit II 50 from which they’re designed to absorb and trans- 55 produce vacuum’ instantly beneath, which attracts part of the mixture again in opposition to the core, causing it to travel parallel with the core and in intimate contact therewith. The upper edges I6 of those conductor plates I5 are beveled outwardly and in a path of journey of the gasoline mixture towards the conduit wall and the opposed or rear edges I’I are equally beveled. Fuel is transferred from the storage tank to the vaporiser either by the motion of gravity via a regulating system to prevent “flooding,” or via a small pump, or by the suction of the piston, which lifts the liquid. The means adopted depends on the design of the engine; and it have to be mentioned that, although all the gadgets commonly used impact their objective, none are perfect; this being due quite to the character of an inner explosion engine than to any lack of ingenuity on the part of inventors.
